Cherry Blossoms Redux

I ran around Haines Point today at noon because that's where Sunday's Cherry Blossom 10-Miler went. I was intrigued by the comment in Jim Hage's write-up of the race that around Haines Point, "the blossoming cherry trees nearly formed a tunnel." Well, yeah, I can confirm that. Imagine running through that kind of scenery in a race, with the sparkling blue water of the Potomac set off by the lush pink petals of Cherry Blossoms in full bloom. (Right: The Jefferson Memorial across the Tidal Basin.)

(Left: M and L run under a canopy of Cherry Blossoms along the Tidal Basin a week ago. L, having just turned 60, started running in January and turned in a 1:23 at the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler. Whew.) The Cherry Blossoms are becoming wizened, for sure. A week ago they were glorious, now they are merely very good. They have definitely peaked and are starting to blow off the trees, but maybe it will still be showy this weekend in Washington. The viewing was still good today and the Tidal Basin was full of tourists out on rented paddle boats. I'll leave you with some more pictures of last Wednesday's run. (Right: Can any readers identify this beautiful and evocative little monument in the city of big monuments?)

Wow.
That looks beautiful.
What a different environment from where I live.
Looks like a very nice 10 miler.
Doesn't the cherry blossom blooming attract a lot of visitors?

peter, thanks for stopping by my blog yesterday.

at the risk of going off on a non-running tangent - how cool was it to see "why the allies won," by overy on your book list. that is a great book (and i'm was a wwii buff for the longest time).

so glad that tomas mentioned our blogs - will be visiting here often!

I think it would be really, really neat if you'd put together a slideshow of all photos you have taken of running cohorts, races, scenery, etc. I think we'd all enjoy it tremendously, as you are a talented photographer!

Can't identify the monument.. but is that Christmas lights decorating it?

I'm way behind on blog comments because my laptop stopped working for a while after I tipped a glass of red wine on the keyboard. Seems to be dried out enough to work now. Hmmmm!

Gorgeous photos and so evocative. I love DC but haven't been for such a long time - maybe I'll add MCM to my list if I can get back on the road again ..

And Sunshine's comment just made me laugh - sitting at my laptop with a glass of wine is what I do (from time to time before you report me to AA)..
