I've joined

I was dragged into the new century today because I had to add word moderation (requiring a word recognition pause) to the comment section of my blog. Sorry!

Anonymous was getting out of hand about his investment opps, "school" projects, Vegas fun, adult sites, conspiracy theories and more. I was deleting two or three of his "comments" a day.

I dislike censorship in any form, and I am chary of leaving my own comments on moderated comment sections (where the owner has to approve them first) and I find word recognition pauses to be time consuming and frustrating because I can't make out some of those bizarre, run together letter combinations. Oh well.

It's the world we live in, where nothing is free or innocent or fair or easy and system momentum seems to operate against purely "having fun." Live forever in hell with all the divorce lawyers, Anonymous.

Yeah, it sucks that people leave those types of stupid comments. I didn't turn on word verification but had to disallow anonymous comments and that seemed to help.

I got spammed recently on every blogpost I had ever written - most annoying. Thankfully it stopped but I nearly had to go this far.

I hate doing the verification, but every time I take it off, I get spammed :-(

In the past few weeks I've seen a LOT of that crap on my blogs, seveeral a day. Seems like it suddenly got a lot worse. I hate those pimply-faced assholes who write the robots that leave comments. Seems like whenever there is a really good thing, someone will figure out a way to screw it up for everyone.

Why on earth does Anonymous want me (or anyone) to think that my blog post helped with a school project? I could understand a reason for that spam if it contained a web link, but it's just harassment.

I may have to add word verification, as you have. But I did recently add comment moderation on posts older than 30 days, which helps a lot. It would REALLY help in the case that Petaruns describes, where every post got spammed.

I momentarily lifted the word verification function on my blog and within a few weeks someone had planted a nasty (as in program-eating AND porn) hyperlink that actually looked like it went to a running blog. Sneaky, sneaky.

So, rather than view it as censorship, consider the extra step protecting your readers' computers.

That's VERY good point, Anne
